More Moves to be Made?

2/16/2010

Ok, maybe I have to eat my words a little bit regarding Olli Jokinen. He's been playing well, especially at the point on the power play, and that game winner against Pittsburgh was sweet. It wasn't the most breathtaking goal, but I love beating Cindy Crosby and Pitt. It was awesome to get a win like that. Hopefully Jokinen will be able to continue playing at a high level after the Olympic break.

Even though the Jokinen trade seems to be a good one, the Rangers still need more pieces if they want to be serious contenders. I like the signing of Jody Shelley to be an enforcer from defense. The Blueshirts haven't had a guy like that in a long time, and he's a proven fighter. Luckily, we shouldn't have to watch Aaron Voros dance with an opposing player anymore.

What this team needs most I think is a big physical guy that can go to the front of the net...and score. There are plenty of guys on this team willing to go to the tough areas, but quite frankly, Chris Drury and Ryan Callahan aren't big or strong enough to be a real force down low. I don't know who will be available around the deadline, or for what price, but I would love Dustin Brown (yeah, I know he's not going anywhere, but can't a man dream?). I guess someone in his mold would be good.

I think the Rangers should be able to get a quality player too. Obviously it will be tough to acquire a big name because of all the cap trouble (sending down Redden and/or Roszival would help that) but we have pieces to move. There are two capable goalies in Hartford and a crop of young defensemen that can be moved. With Mike Del Zotto's play this year, I think Bobby Sanguinetti has become expendable for the right player and even guys like Corey Potter should have some value.

This Blueshirt squad I think has the talent to go far, but for whatever reason, the attitude doesn't seem to be there. I think a couple of guys could really push this team over the edge and bring more confidence to this group. Sather obviously doesn't have the best track record, but I'll toast to hoping he can get the job done.
